Over the weekend I had some fun playing on my iPad with five new iOS games from Vietnamese studio Fifth Media Corporation. The games are pretty simple with old-school graphics, but the gameplay is pretty fun, playing on basic game mechanics from some favorites.
Fifth Media, which is focused mainly on B2B mobile games (meaning games built for specific companies, especially for branding), has only recently gotten into the consumer mobile gaming business after releasing its games platform, Star Arcade. In total, these games have garnered over 1.3 million downloads.
All told, the studio has eight consumer games online now including Diamonds Paradise, Jelly Wars, BattleShips, Memory Game, King Of Words, Reversi, Tic Tac Toe, and Mancala. All of these are based on very well known games, but Fifth Media adds a layer of online gameplay that makes each one a little more exciting. Pit your wits against a stranger and see how you really do.
By far, Jelly Wars is my favorite game in this batch. It takes Angry Birds and twists it completely. Instead of trying to knock down a bunch of pigs from makeshift buildings, your goal is to knock down your opponent from his perch or building into the water. You can also win by hitting him enough times with a ball that explodes on impact, possibly destroying him or the structures around him. Each game will take about 15 minutes, but it’s quite strategic and fun to see what your opponent will do next.
A pretty simple iOS adaptation of the classic battleship game that kids used to play on paper. The object of the game, of course, is to sink the opponents’ battleship. In my opinion, the game takes a bit too long.
Diamonds Paradise - Definitely my second favorite game in this collection. The game takes the usual Candy Crush-like concept and makes it between two people. Thus, you can fight and see who can make the best diamond combinations. Whoever makes the bigger set of combos is bound to win. Of course, it’s got a few nice easter eggs like bombs and bees that help destroy the other player.
Memory Game : Now, playing this game brought me back to grade school, underlining how appealing this set of games is for kids. The game is like the kids memory game wherein you have to flip over identical cards to get points. The player that flips over the most pairs of identical cards wins the game.
King Of Words For Scrabble aficionados and people who love word games like me, this game is sweet. You get about 90 to 100 letters on the board and the person, by the end of a game, whoever can spell the most words, wins. The studio also has a few other games worth mentioning including Reversi,
Tic Tac Toe, and Mancala. Their gameplay is pretty obvious, taking the classic offline games and putting them online with other players.
If you’ve got a few minutes to kill in your day, give them a play. Don’t expect any rich graphics and pizzazz but they’ll give you some fun for a few hours, especially if you’re into the classics.
